Hi! I’m Jan, have been working for WBS for 10 years.
Jan Thompson trained at the Jennifer Bullick School of Ballet in Northern Ireland from the age of four and achieved Distinction throughout her Royal Academy of Dance examinations. During this time she attended the Royal Ballet Summer School, won two RAD summer school scholarships and Kenny Burke also awarded her a scholarship to attend the Aberdeen Dance Summer School (AIYF).
At eighteen, she won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dance, London where she continued with her dance training and studied to become a dance teacher. She was student president from 2002-2003 and it was during her time here that she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in the Art and Teaching of Classical Ballet, Licentiate and Associates. She performed for the RAD at HQ, the English Speaking Union and the Cochrane Theatre, London and taught at the RAD, Thomas’s London Day Schools and Lewisham College.
Other performances include: The 75th Anniversary of the Royal Academy of Dance at the Grand Opera House, Belfast and the National Concert Hall, Dublin and The Royal Swedish Ballet’s production of ‘Cinderella’.
From 2005-2006, Jan worked in New York at Coupe Theatre Studio. Here she taught Classical Ballet, Jazz and Modern to children and adults and she worked with professionals from New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and Broadway for the annual school shows. For the shows she collaborated with all the staff at Coupe, Debbie Campbell, Bill Hastings, Terri Klausner, Michelle Lucci and Ted Kevitt (Purchase College, NYC) to name a few! Jan was also invited to teach at the Coupe Theatre Studio Summer Programme. During her time in New York, she performed in the Rockland Youth Dance Ensemble (RYDE) Nutcracker Ballet along with Robert Tucker (Tony Award winner for choreography and friend of the late Bob Fosse).
Miss Jan makes sure to keep up to date by attending RAD courses and CPD courses as part of ‘life-long learning’. She has taught at the Dansarena Studios Summer School (Karen Gage) and the Stenhouse School of Dance Summer School (Irene Langlands). Miss Jan has recently become a RAD mentor for students wishing to undertake the Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies and has given Ballet workshops to British Gymnastics N.I at the University of Ulster.
Miss Jan manages WBS from a distance but returns home to Northern Ireland regularly to assess and see all the fabulous WBS students and parents. She also teaches classical Ballet in France in the local schools and villages and has currently (2017) obtained her ‘Diplome d’Etat de Professeur de Dance’ in France.
